Analysing the sixth sense title sequence.

Three quarters of the title sequence is just the credits and titles , the way they do this is genius though , a combination of the dark , slow and creepy orchestra music playing and the dark , slowly fading into the black dark screen credits automatically gives the audience  an idea of what this film will involve and the themes of the film. The slow music emphasises a kind of upsetting and scary atmosphere when watching this film and the very faint and fading credits that slowly creep into the background emphasise a very ghostly idea which tells us themes of this film but doesn't give away enough for the audience to really know what's going to happen , and doesn't ruin it.

The black screen fades into the beginning of the film , The actress enters a cellar and we automatically get a slightly anxious feeling as she slowly picks wine in a dark/cold/bare room . The way they create this feeling as she is in what seems like a cold and dark cellar , automatically gives the audience more proof of the films themes.

Camera shots also add to this feeling , the shot behind the wine rack gives the audience a feeling of the woman not being alone in the room . Without actually adding effects / noises / dialogue or shots that actually scare or jump out at you , they use other themes like locations , shots and music that subtly adds an awkward and creepy atmosphere .

Casting problems

Today we were informed that Phil who was originally always going to be the main character will most likely not be able to be in it . We looked through a list of teachers at the school which included a photo of them all . We looked for teachers which we thought would fit our characters perfectly . We came to the end of the list with our own little list of teachers that could work . At the top of our list was a teacher from art , we asked him about dates and whether he would be available , which he wasn't due to January art exams. We then went to confirm with our actress that she would be available , sadly we were informed she wouldn't be able to make time for it . We had a serious problem , we had no actors . We looked to Phil for ideas on who too look to for casting , he gave us a few ideas of people that suited the part and may have time but told us to leave it to him . Otherwise we've confirmed our two locations , props and storyline.

Evaluating the Pilot

Once we finished editing and putting together our pilot , which overall was a struggle , we had little recourses, including using our phones , and very basic editing software , but we eventually got there and had a media teacher evaluate and guide us on things we could have done better . Simon began by saying that we filmed it well , using good locations and props , but he didn't quite understand what it was about , and had no idea what the idea of our pilot was trying to portray or suggest to the audience what would happen later in the film.He basically reminded us that we need to give part of the film away to excite and get the audience interested as if they know whats going to happen , but not too much to ruin the film. I quote "its been edited very nicely and filmed very nicely for a pilot , but i think you need to make it a lot clearer on what your trying to say ."

We had problems with continuity , the pilot didnt really flow very well in some shots , lastly because we were behind deadline , we didnt get to film and edit the ending to the pilot , which would have helped make more sense and give more of a story and background to it.Our problem with continuity can vaguely be blamed on the poor quality of our editing software that we had to use , in our final title sequence we would have hopefully saughted this problem out.

Preparing for the Pilot pt.2

The day before we shoot our pilot we went out looking for areas for different shots , we also evaluated what props , actors and vehicles we would need and use. We decided that I would film the shots of the man cutting and collecting firewood , then driving off . We found the perfect location for these shots , the photos below are shots of the area . as you can see below in the first image , the area is isolated and quite baron , perfect for a horror thriller opening scene.

This shot would involve Phil chopping wood then picking it up.

This shot would show him getting into the car and beginning to drive off .

We planned to shoot from this angle as he drove away , overlooking this shot we followed the basic rule of only shooting from one side , otherwise it can complicate and confuse the audience.

This was a panorama of the whole area.

We then went on to looking for a location too shoot our kitchen scene , we struggled for a while as we only had the lesson to search for the location and we had to film in school. Eventually we found a spot perfect for a kitchen scene , we then got our props together for the final shoot.

Planning the shoot of our pilot sequence.

Yesterday our groups planned our pilot sequences , a member of our group was ill so sadly couldn't input . We were informed to firstly make the pilot as similar as possible to what our real title sequence will look like, which meant we would have to use a lot of the same shots , secondly look at all the different aspects that would make our sequence , we had too plan the locations we would shoot at , the sourcing of appropriate costumes and outfits , the props and the actors. the pilot will be shot on our phones , we planned to use my iPhone as it has the best camera .
We drew a plan , including different shots , themes of credits and the title . It looked a little like this :

Locations - Our pilot has to be filmed within the school as we only have a short period of time to shoot and edit it. we hadn't quite made our minds up on setting but we need a place that involves a kitchen with a window that ideally looks onto a road.

Outfits - We would use women's very average avery day casual outfit for the woman , and dirty rugged casual clothes for the man who has basically been out cutting fire wood , to fit the males charecter.

Props - We will need a kettle , knife and vegetables , hoover and hopefully a car .

Actors - An elder man and elder woman , we would use teachers from hurtwood as an elder couple.

Effects-We are going to include credits that fade off the screen the whole way through the pilot and a title that will fade also , then obvioulsy the usual effects that we will use to enhance sounds , blend shot etc..
In order of shots , this would be the description of the pilot sequence . Begin with a black screen , a chopping noise can be heard , the credits slowly appear then fade in the top left corner , then the title comes up "Anna" , then fades , the chopping noise then fades into a synced ecu shot of a knife cutting vegetables . The shot then switches to a ecu of a kettle steaming (the whole way through , the credits are entering then fading in the top right corner ) . Then a medium shot of the back of a woman , including the kettle and we see her chopping . Then a shot of a window and we see her shadow walk past , straight after we see a car drive past , it then suddenly changes to the lowed noise of a hoover turning on , and a ecu of the hoover going back and forth , then a shot of the back of her as she moves the hoover , slowly we see two hands come behind her and grab her , we soon realize with a shot of them hugging that its her husband.

Wednesday and Thursday development.

Wednesday
In the wednesday lesson the group informed me of the new plans , I automatically disapproved of some points and shots but believed it was a good start and that we could expand and develop from this point now . Most of the lesson was spent thinking of new shots as we were still lacking in ideas for footage . the lesson didn't really come to much use as we still hadn't filled out the timeline sheets or come up with new ideas.
Thursday
On thursday another member of the group was ill , making it hard for us to get work done but by the end of the day we had completed all the work we had to have done by the weekend. we began by coming up with a title for the film . "Anna" . We agreed we would need to start a new idea , including old shots and themes from previous ideas . We sat talking and coming up with new shots , every know and then when we came up with one , we wrote it down on the timeline sheet and drew an image in the designated area of what we imagined it too look like .

We began with an establishing shot of a house , then silent shots of inside the house (a hall or room) , then the noise of a knife cutting things would begin , then a shot of a kettle or tap then the ecu of a knife cutting food , meanwhile the credits are coming on in a corner , slowly creeping away after every chop sound. We then had the idea of the screen fading into a black background , the title popping up , and the noise of an axe chopping , the title slowly fades away and then suddenly a low shot of a man aggressively chopping a piece of wood as if to chop the audience . then different shots as the man collects the wood , gets his dog into his car , drives off down a road. we would have quick ecu's of things like the keys going into the ignition , The dog panting etc. We then cut to a ecu  shot of a vacuum , then the woman cleaning again , and a mid shot of her in front of a window , vacuuming , we see the car drive past on the driveway , but the vacuum noise is so great she doesn't notice . The music builds with tension as a close up shot of her shoulders shows hands slowly scare her , the music lowers as tension ends as a shot of the man and her talking shows its just her husband . This was all a rough draft but , we got some good notes down , filled in the timelines showed above and completed what we should have .

Development on the title sequence -Tuesday

In the tuesday lesson i was sadly absent but my group began developing our ideas we had for the title sequence . We were determined to follow the basic story of the dead wife of a husband haunting his new family and there home . They thought the title sequence would mainly include our washing line idea, that included the strong , loud and howling winds blowing them . Behind the sheets we would get the impression of a woman in a black dress behind them . Due to the development we've changed our idea completely , partly as the whole thing would depend on us picking the perfect and random day to shoot in a loud and windy environment, the idea was also quite basic and we believed we could expand on it. The group were given sheets , that would act as timelines for our title sequence , where we could draw and write each shot of the sequence.

In the lesson my group came up with a new idea for the sequence , trying to use shots that creeped the audience out but without using anything really terrifying. they described the sequence as going like this.
" we came up with the idea of the sequence starting off with an establishing shot of a house, then we would have a wide shot from some bushes watching some kids playing football, then we would have an extreme close up of a knife cutting, then you would see hands come from behind the woman, she would scream and turn around and you would see that it was just the husband."
They decided to stick to this idea until i returned to discuss it with them , where we could develop the idea or change it completley.

New idea from fridays lesson

Last Friday I came up with the idea of completely changing our idea form a haunted hotel to something to do with a family home that's haunted by the owners ex lover. we thought about the title sequence , not directly including the ghost in it , but creating a creepy atmosphere through everyday life at this house . including a washing line outside . the idea is yet to be developed , but we related our thoughts to the title sequence of "the sixth sense ". Where the director gives the audience a feeling of tension without scaring them , or including anything particularly terrifying.

Our sequence , wont actually show a ghost , it will give the audience the creepy and tense feeling without scaring them through screams or ghosts. etc.. The title sequence will involve something similar to the film "it" , where a scene involves the clown slowly appearing behind laundry sheets blowing in the wind , if we used this it would be little sections of a figure of a woman that you subtly see or a shadow , from inside a house . watch from 00:20to 00:50

The laundry part would only be for a bit , then it would change to the loud noise of a kettle or something to distract you , and release the tension , to then continue the film

We would include a lot of noise into the sequence , building tension that worries the audience as if something is about to happen , like the roar of the wind , or sharpening of blades (is actually someone getting ready to cook) , a kettles wistle , the dog bark. etc

related title sequences to our thriller

We watched thriller title sequences that could relate to our two mane ideas , firstly the idea of the crocodile  and then the idea of the haunted house or hotel . we took notes on each title sequence and how they could relate to ours.

For the haunted idea we watched
Hostel
Tenant
Taken
repulsion

we watched these few as some scenes were similar to our full plot of our original horror thriller idea , including scenes with screaming coming from rooms , which relates to a scene we were going to include in our title sequence.

Hostel included a dark , damp area , with blood going down a drain , implying certain moods and atmospheres in the title sequence.

Taken- the into establishes a birthday party with grainy footage that suggested it was seen by characters .
The tenant began with an establishing high shot that showed a run down building that the film was probably based in

For the crocodile idea we watched the following

jaws
alligator
lake placid
monsters
clover field

Jaws started underwater shows the water is key to the film , cuts to surface to show shot of beach showing beginning scene , shots of girl in water , as of tip be a shark.

alligator shows extreme close up of alligators eyes , suggesting the films plot , then zooms to show where and what is happening , alligator has blood foreshowing what's about to happen.

Lake placid was similar to the shining , building tension , text is like water ripples , goes underwater suggesting plot.

monsters , text suggests plot of film , suddenly starts with jumpy loud noises , ending tension.

clover field ,  emergency broadcast builds tension , suggests plot of film immediately , central park on news flash, shows films base.

The exercise gave us ideas on what to include and how other films built tension or showed the ideas and areas the films would cover in their title sequences.

Documentry on title sequences

Today we watched a short documentary on what makes a good and effective title sequence , we watched professionals and directors explain title sequences and what makes them interesting.
Thomas Sutcliffe said , "films need to seduce their audience into long term commitment . while there are many types of seduction, the temptation to go for instant arousal is almost irresistible .He's clearly advising that , you shouldn't fall into the trap of giving away too much in the title sequence or beginning of the film, otherwise the audience aren't lead on to continue watching , it becomes boring and predictable . instead give away a bit , to  excite the audience for what's about to come next .
The documentary interviewed the director Jean Jacques Beineix, who explained the "risks of instant arousal". also commenting on not giving away the film and not being able to keep  up the high levels of interest and excitement. he also commented on the risk of not being able to answer the metaphorical questions from the title sequence , which leads to confusion and a boring film for the audience.
"a good beginning must make the audience feel that it doesn't know nearly enough yet, and at the same time make sure that it doesn't know too little".
The film critic   Stanley Kauffmann described what makes a good title sequence and opening scene . 1.establishing shot
2.close up of a building of which the film is generally set.
3.the camera focuses on a window
4.the camera moves past the receptionist to where you meet the main character .
The directors also gave examples of some of the greatest title sequences like , "the shining", and "seven". The shining , is a shot following the car like a predator , into mountains , the music clearly emphasises that wherever they are going , is a bad place. For seven it was said that it told the story but also showed the obsessive nature of the main character and foreshadowed what was going to happen.

Pitching our final ideas

We were informed a few days before the class that we would be pitching our ideas to a media teacher that would give us honest feedback on them, we were also told to break down our ideas into three final ideas , each chosen by one member of the group , then between ourselves come up with the final , best and most inspiring idea that we could branch on . we chose the idea that originaly came from the man being stranded by the crocodile for two weeks. After which we had to come up with two other ideas to randomly pitch to the teacher .
I came up with the idea of a story about a small motel that has a ghostly problem , the title sequence would appear as being fully shot on security camera tv's , as if you were watching different security cameras in the motel , one camera pointing on a door of a room , then we have a voice over as if through a walky talky or phone of the manager saying that guests in rooms below this room could hear screaming , the voice over continues to say to someone that the room hasnt been booked out by anyone , then switches to the elevator where you see security going up , then changes to a corridor camera as you see him walk up to the door , then switches to the other end of the corridor , you hear screams , as if they were coming from inside the room , and the camera cuts as the voice over tells security not to go in as police are on there way .
Another member of the group pitched his idea of the aftermath of hurricane katrina in new orleans , as a man attempts to travel through floods to reach his family . This was pitched as a disaster thriller as mine was a horror thriller.
When we pitched the first two ideas , we got feedback saying , firstly both ideas were good , but both of them would have too much dialogue in the opening title sequences , this isn't good as were using un trained actors in out title sequences , and too much talking will most likely lead to it not working. Also the two plots came across as being confusing which would make it difficult to finish.
we then pitched the idea of the crocodile that we developed , that we based around films like , jaws , lake placid and alligator , with a similar title sequence of jaws , as a group of friends are by a river edge , a few friends drinking around a fire , having a good time , a couple plan to go swimming in the river , the girlfriend jumps in as the boyfriend drunkly prepares himself for the water , she suddenly is struck , dragged down and you see ripples and small waves as she struggles underwater . We got good feedback but there were a few problems with this idea , firstly the river at this time of year would be freezing for someone to be swimming in , secondly it will be difficult for the girl to look as if she was being attacked underwater , as if there was an aligator. This idea was vaguely based on the similar title sequence of jaws .

stories and sub-genres influencing thriller ideas

After being placed in groups of three , Phil kindly gave us a sheet full of stories and news clips on things that have been coming up in the news over the past year , stories that could be easily turned into a thriller film , he asked us in our groups to select four stories from the list that we liked , the four we chose had to be able to be split into four different sub-genres and all be different from one another. we looked into each story and chose ones that we found would be easily expandable and inspiring .
This gives you an indication on the amount of stories to choose from. We selected

We then began to brainstorm ideas , including a full story line for a thriller , and the opening title sequence which would be around three minutes long.
Crocodile stalking man for two weeks
We chose this as it came across as unique and different , we felt something like this hadn't been done before and could be expanded upon very easily, the storyline could have been placed under many different sub-genres , but we chose this to be an action thriller as it suited the role the best .
Story line
A group of friends are terrorised by a huge crocodile , one of them is lost to it , soon to realise its a giant crocodile that had escaped from a local zoo , English villagers based near rivers are on the hunt to capture the crocodile and claim a bounty for it as it continues to terrorise children swimming in rivers .
Opening title sequence
A group of friends around a camp fire next to the rivers edge , drinking , having fun , a couple plan to go swimming and the girl is suddenly taken from underwater , quickly and suddenly as her drunk boyfriend is clambering into the water , screams of the boyfriend as ripples of a beast go down river.
Man stuck in Andes mountains
This story struck us as being quite interesting and could work as a thriller title sequence , we decided on this as being a psychological thriller .
Story line
Man riding through the Andes mountains gets stuck , and is unable to release himself from a rock crushing him and his bike on top of a mountain , he struggles four a few weeks before he is found and released , rushed to hospital .
Opening title sequence
Very simply a man riding his bike through very dangerous and rocky mountains , a far shot of him bicycling up whilst credits role.
Mission to mars
We thought this story would work well with the conspiracy sub genre heading ,could have come off as unique and different to most thrillers .
Story line
Aoup of people being sent to mars to rely information on the planet , and go back to earth , however they realise other humans have been there and clearly been stranded to die . in the same situation the group have to find a way to return.
Title sequence
Conversation between people at ground control and a man in the ship. They are talking about what the man will do and how this is a very important job. The clip then ends with footage of a ship taking off which is accompanied by a T-Minus count.

Genre 2

WHY IS GENRE A RELEVENT CONCEPT FOR AUDIENCES?
Genres allow for films to be divided into groups so that the audience can decide on whether they feel like watching one thing or the other , it also allows for them to decide whether they are  going to enjoy the film or not. Most film lovers have bigger interests in a particular genre to others , so it allows for a kind of guideline to form . The audience c an already expect what the film will be like due to genre. A genre tends to follow the same themes and story line in every film , so the genre allows for the audience to expect what's going to happen in different scenes because they may have witnessed something like it before , shown through  mise en scene or camera or editing

HOW DOES GENRE EFFECT FILMPRODUCTIONCOMPANIES?
Genre allows for a film company to release a film knowing its going to work and be successful , this is because the production company can used the tried an tested formula they've used on films in the same genre, films that have been successful. they know the target audience and what they like through older similar films of the same genre. Secondly genre allows for the production company to follow a basic and already made film structure of the particular genre when making a new film. the genre is basically a list of instructions , containing themes and plots that are very similar to other films of the same genre.

A few production companies that made some of the greatest films.

WHY IS GENRE USEFUL TO FILM DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES?
The films genre automatically puts an image in your head , is it going to be funny, scary , thrilling , romantic? When you hear the name of a genre you have an image in your head , colours coordinated to this genre , themes , plots stories , characters . so genres allow for the distribution company to advertise the film through posters or signs or in magazines , making the film stand out so that you remember the film. Genre just makes it easier for theses companies to do there job , the colours , images etc...on a poster should give the audience a feel to the film , it should suggest the genre and themes of the film , and genre makes it easier to do that.

Genre 1

GENRE;The term for any category of literature or other forms of art or entertainment, e.g. music, whether written or spoken, audial or visual.
For a specific genre you would expect to see similarities in films , for example in a western film you would have a very similar setting , the stereotypical desert and saloon , the shootout and the lover that needs saving .
Unlike most other genres , thriller films do not share the same iconography to each other , there are many different sub genres for thriller films , for example action thrillers  have completley different features to crime thrillers , action thrillers are fast paced , exciting and can be very similar to horrors films , whilst crime thrillers are normally slower paced , not so much action involved , and tend to follow the story of a criminal(s) or a crime.
There are many types of sub genre thriller , eg,
1Crime Thriller
2Action Thriller
3Conspiracy
4Disaster etc..
The overall aim of a thriller is to quite basically 'thrill' the audience , and shock them with some amazing ending to a film , films under different sub genres may have different plots and meanings but they make the audience feel on edge , excited and shocked , done through editing and camera work. films under different sub genres tend to follow different levels of mise en scene and acting , this is what parts sub genres , but overall a thriller does one thing .

All three of these films contain similar themes , plots and stories , Terminator is about machines coming from another planet and destroying earth as a few individuals try to defend it and stop 'judgment day' in some of the final films , earth is being destroyed , and every survivor has to fend for themselves, The road is about the world being ruined , and every survivor fights for themselves until earth is wiped of its few remaining survivors. I am legend is about zombies destroying a city in america , whilst one man tries to cure the zombies and is one of the only remaining survivors. as you can see all three of these go under the sub genre title of disaster thriller , each follows a similar plot and themes. All have very similar posters , all with the main charecters on them , two show destroyed backgrounds , all very similar kind of full colours emphasisng ruins and destruction.

Finished prelim

Overall I found our prelim went well , especially for our first time and for guys that have never acted before. only a few problems , as we filmed the script over and over in different views , sometimes they would be said differently , making it hard to flow and link into each clip, for example , the door , when he opens it he comes in very quickly , but before the door handle and door open slowly. Match on action really helped the cuts to look smooth , when someone's moving and it cuts to a different camera angle while he's still moving it looks a lot better than standing still, for example , one of the last cuts , as Dmitry leaves it cuts to an over the shoulder view.

One hour photo-conventions of title sequence

Prelim Shooting

On the 19th of September we began the shooting of our prelim , we haver five members in our group , two actors following a script that could have been interpreted in many different ways , in my group was Liam , Dmitry, Massimo and Melissa , we filmed on a very basic set of just a wall , a corridor , and a flight of stairs. I and Melissa were the camera man , we were given a set script with images on it.

We tried to get every single shot possible from some of the main and key angles we were taught , overall taking about ten takes overall , all running through the script from different angles and views , showing different actors emotions , every take the actors had to stand in the same positions , so we used markers on the floor to guide them , every now and then we would have to retake a shot because someone may forget there lines or mess up , but in the end we got all the shots

Conventions of a thriller sequence

THE STEPFATHER
Today we discussed the conventions of a thriller title sequence, and so I am analysing the first two minutes of the thriller The Stepfather.
MISE EN SCENE / PROPS
Immediately the music gives off a very creepy impression , we then see the post mans clipboard , saying that the house he's looking at has cancelled its payment , this gives us the impression someone is leaving the house. Then suddenly switches to a view of instruments on a table , neatly laid out , gives us the impression they are weapons or being used for bad purposes, they turn out to be general toiletry instruments. The tidy and neat formation emphasise that this man has extreme care and we get the impression he has a form of ocd Giving off an impression he's trying to change his looks.

CAMERA
Medium close up views of his face with a beard and dark hair with glasses show us his identity , after seeing him shaving and dying his hair we know he's up to something.
An extreme close up of the main characters face after he's changed his looks , gives us the impression he's concentrated on something , his serious face and vague lack of emotion suggests he's not comfortable , we get the impression so far that he's changing his looks.

TITLES
The text listing credits subtly appear and then slowly fade away , giving the viewer a very creepy/gloomy first impression

Editing the prelim

Today in the media studio we began a tutorial on editing the short shots we did for our prelim using final cut pro.
Before starting we were shown the program final cut server that transfers the shots from the Sony nx5 to final cut pro, we were told that most film makers normally wouldn't use final cut pro due to its lack of very detailed ability to edit. They normally use a program called AVID.
We then began final cut pro and transferred the films we took , beginning by making a "bin" and naming the "rush bin", which is basically a folder for the shots that were not going to be used for editing. Then we made a "log bin", this is where we placed shots that would be edited, we learnt that when placing a file into the log bin from the rush bin , we were only duplicating the file and placing the duplicated version into the log bin , so all of our old work was still saved in the rush bin.
Then we began the editing , only learning how to "cut" different shots so that they linked up and flowed into one another , selecting different shots from the log bin and cutting them , using the I key and the O key. I standing for IN and O standing for OUT, u select the length of the clip your cutting by using the two keys , then dragging them so that they link up with one another.

Sony NX5

Last Thursday we learnt a few of the basic steps to setting up and using the Sony nx5.

we began by...
1.setting up and extending the tripods used for holding the camera.
2.Then centred the camera on the tripod by using the bubble mechanism on the camera.

3.Focusing the camera , by using auto focusing and manually doing it ourselves.

 4.zooming in and out manually.

5.we learnt how to white balance the camera , by zooming into a white object , and taking up the whole view with white ,it allows for the camera to adapt to the  surrounding colours.

6. lastly we were taught how to use the exposure rings to allow for the lense to adjust to the general .
